Looking at the following notice, it is difficult to imagine the horrible anxiety felt by all those on the home front. When one considers that for every single missing soldier there was likely 10 or 20 relatives desparate for news it is hardly surprising that all but the most efficient bureaucracy would soon bog down through tens of thousands of telegrams, phone calls and letters.
